5 adventure activities in Southampton

Are you on the hunt for a new adventure or know someone that loves trying new activities? When restrictions allow there will be time to plan some incredible experiences in the great outdoors. All of the following activities are based in glorious Southampton, so whether you are local to the area or looking to visit, carry on reading for some epic adventure inspiration. Southampton boasts stunning coastlines, charming rivers, breathtaking views and an abundance of wonderful wildlife.

Skiing 

Whilst ski trips abroad are currently a bit out of reach, we’ve got the ideal alternative; dry slope skiing! The feeling of getting to grips with the art of skiing and its technique is unrivalled. From learning the basic turns and stopping, to carving your way down the slope, there’s always something to learn or improve upon. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP)

Looking for a full-body workout that is also a relaxing and explorative experience? SUP might just be what you’re after. It is a therapeutic and mindful activity. As you glide through calm waters you get space to think whilst taking in the beautiful surroundings and nature. Everyone, from grandparents to kids, will be kept entertained. It’s an adventure for all. Remember to keep your eyes peeled to spot fish, birds and other wildlife too. With access to the sea and River Hamble, Southampton has some diverse and exciting locations to paddle in. Paddleboarding is also a fantastic option throughout the winter so pop on some layers, and you’re good to go! 

Where to go: The Paddle Centre, which is located between Southampton and Portsmouth, sits on the banks of the River Hamble overlooking Swanwick Marina. They provide 1 to 1 bespoke lessons, SUP safaris, SUP yoga and group classes with a friendly and dedicated paddling team - you are bound to have a brilliant time.

Kayaking & Canoeing

Discover the beauty of Southampton by kayak or canoe for an awesome day out. Paddling by kayak or canoe is a great way to freely explore the waterways and nature on offer in Southampton. New to the sport? Joining a lesson or introductory course is the quickest and safest way to enjoy canoeing or kayaking. Kitesurfing 

Do you enjoy a challenge and love pushing yourself to the limit? If you like what you hear, kitesurfing could be your next big passion! Harness the power of the wind whilst tackling the waves. Whether you’re new to the sport or you want to improve your technique, getting a lesson is key to kitesurfing progression. The kitesurfing community in Southampton is vastly expanding due to the amazing conditions the south coast has to offer, as well as the pure thrill of the sport. As long as you can confidently swim and have a basic level of fitness there is nothing stopping you giving kitesurfing a try.

The freedom of exploring new places, whilst controlling a boat, are just some of the many joys of sailing. Once you learn the basics you can blissfully navigate around the Southampton shores and be at one with the sea. Take in the sunshine, wildlife and sea breeze as you cruise or race around the harbour.
