2021’s spookiest Halloween activities

It’s that time of year again! The streets are lined with Jack-o’-lanterns and there are cobwebs on every corner, which can only mean one thing - Halloween has arrived!

From the family-friendly to the frankly frightful, you’re sure to find an activity that’s right for you this Halloween. To help you get into the season’s splendidly spooky spirit, we’ve found five of the eeriest experiences to try.

Explore a frightful forest

What could be creepier than a gloomy forest at night? Join a guided tour at Woodmill Outdoor Activities Centre in Southampton for a spooky stroll through the woods. The later you book, the scarier the experience! But beware - you may encounter some fiendish friends along the way…

Paddle through the gloom

Stand-up paddleboarding, also known as SUP, is a tranquil, accessible activity that’s growing in popularity every year. 

If you’re looking for a SUP adventure this Halloween, head to Adventure SUP Avon Valley near Bristol for a fancy dress-friendly trip down the River Avon. Stopping at the Jolly Sailor Pub for lunch, you’ll enjoy spooky games throughout the day. £10 from each booking will be donated to the Bat Conservation Project.

For an evening paddle, visit Wokingham Waterside Centre near Reading for a dusk or night-time SUP trip along the Thames. You can choose from canoes, kayaks, or double-hulled katakanus and explore the misty river together.

Visit a haunted dam

One of six dams along the Elan Valley in central Wales, Pen y Garreg houses a unique access tunnel to its central tower. This Halloween, it’s home to a family-friendly spooky dam open day!

Explore a winding woodland trail, collecting clues as you go. Put these clues together to get the password needed to access the dam’s central tower, where a collection of treats awaits intrepid explorers. A great day out for kids and big kids alike!

Swim beneath the night sky

Based in the heart of Manchester’s historic Salford Quays, Salford Watersports are running a unique Halloween swimming session on October 28th. You’ll set off after sunset and make your way around the docks beneath the night sky.

Salford Watersports are also running family-friendly Halloween canoeing trips on October 30th Book the 4:30 session for a dusk experience, or go at 5:30 to paddle into the night. Fancy dress is welcome and encouraged - just be sure to bring some glow sticks to light your way!

Join a London ghost walk

With a rich history that stretches back hundreds of years, London is filled with haunted houses, vengeful ghosts, and stories of faceless serial killers. Join Paul Mansfield, a leading expert on Jack the Ripper, for a guided Halloween tour of the city that’s sure to make your hairs stand on end.
