Rainy day activities in Cardiff: indoor and all-weather things to do

by eola
23 October, 2026

When it rains in Cardiff, head for the indoor wave at Cardiff International White Water, or lean into the weather with white water rafting, a dry slope ski lesson or a reservoir paddle, where you were going to get wet anyway. Here are the best indoor and all-weather things to do in and around Cardiff, all bookable online.

Quick picks

Cardiff International White Water: indoor wave, rafting and climbing

Cardiff International White Water, in the International Sports Village at Cardiff Bay, is the city's best bet on a wet day. Its Flowrider indoor wave creates an endless sheet of smooth water, and the Body & Knee Boarding Surf sessions suit beginners from age 6 (minimum height 107cm). Confident riders can move on to the Indoor Wave Stand Up Surf.

If you're going to get soaked, you might as well do it on the only white water rafting course in Cardiff. Standard White Water Rafting is for ages 12 and over, with up to six people per raft. On certain days the pumps are turned down for Family White Water Rafting, which takes children from age 6. For something different, Hot-dogging puts pairs in inflatable two-person kayaks on the rapids, from age 8.

The centre also has a Climbing Wall for ages 6 and up with no experience needed, and an off-site Gorge Walking trip in the Neath Valley for ages 8 and over. Our guide to canyoning in the UK has more on what gorge walking involves.

Cardiff Ski & Snowboard Centre: lessons in all weather

Cardiff Ski & Snowboard Centre on Fairwater Road is an outdoor dry slope, and its lessons run in all weather, so this is one for when you've accepted the rain. The Level 1 Ski First Timer lesson covers balancing, stopping and the snowplough turn, with boots, skis and helmets provided. Children aged 7 to 16 have their own Level 1 Kids ski lesson, and 4 to 6 year olds can start with a 30-minute Mini's lesson.

Come dressed for the weather: waterproofs and gloves make a big difference on a wet slope. Snowboarders have their own Level 1 group lessons too.

Lisvane and Llanishen: reservoir paddling and Halloween workshops

Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs, on the north side of Cardiff, reopened after a major redevelopment with a visitor centre, café, walking trails and watersports, and they're open all year round. You can hire a sit-on-top kayak for a self-guided paddle on Llanishen Reservoir with no experience needed. Buoyancy aids are worn at all times, and children from age 5 can join an adult on the water.

For a properly dry option, the visitor centre runs indoor Halloween sessions. Pumpkin Carving lets children aged 4 and over carve one to take home, and The Great Pumpkin Bake Off adds cupcake decorating, with a maximum of 10 children per session. In the school holidays, the Children's Multi Activity Day With Food is a full day of activities for ages 8 to 15.

Llandegfedd Lake, near Pontypool

Llandegfedd Lake is within easy reach of Cardiff and Newport, and its lakeside café is a cosy base when the weather closes in. Halloween Pumpkin Carving sessions there include biscuit decorating, spooky scratch-art masks and a kids' pizza square, for ages 3 and up. Grown-ups can book an Afternoon Tea looking out across the lake.

When the rain eases, Paddleboard hire on the lake needs no experience, and the deep, clean water has no currents or tides to think about.

Tips for a wet day out

  • Pack a full change of clothes, a towel and a bag for wet kit, even for indoor activities.
  • Check each booking page for age and height limits and what kit is included.
  • Book ahead in the school holidays, when weekend and half-term slots go quickly.
