Family Open Canoe Escape

Strontian

Family time is the best time.

Time in nature is a close second.

Freshly made pizza or burgers might be right behind them...

Doing all that and a canoe adventure in one weekend, away from everyone else and with no cooking to do?

With these in mind, we are offering a unique experience for families with children from 10 years and older or for couples to 'get away from it all' and relax away from people and technology.

Each group is exclusive - only your family and one of our expert local guides - and two days to explore and experience the wonders of the West Highland Peninsulas away from other visitors and car parks.

Food is included from Saturday lunch through to Sunday lunch with the opportunity to make your own pizza or burgers (subject to availability and your dietary requirements) from scratch on Saturday evening! Something for everyone.

Sadly, we will not be able to provide as much locally sourced food as we would like. Hopefully this may change as the summer progresses and we will do what we can. Sorry.

Your guide is there to ensure you get the most from your trip by tailoring it to your level of experience and aspirations. They will offer advice as necessary, perhaps on efficient paddling or putting up your tent. They will also look after your safety throughout the trip and highlight any wildlife that appears or can be found and probably tell you as many local cultural or historical stories as they know!

The distances paddled each day will be quite small making them ideal for novice and younger adventurers. The location is not fixed as this will take into account the winds and tides so that, where possible, we will be paddling with them in sheltered locations.

While we certainly intend you to stay in your canoe and dry, on very rare occasions people do capsize and fall in and it does (only occasionally) rain in Scotland, so please dress appropriately. Changing facilities are temporarily closed due to CV-19, so please come ‘dressed’ for the weekend and do your best to keep the canoe upright!

You may be asked to help move and lift canoes during the weekend, so please let us know if this is going to be difficult for you. Also, tell us if you have any medical or dietary concerns that may affect your participation in the day.

Above all, enjoy your adventure and keep your fingers crossed for an otter or eagle (and other wildlife) to make an appearance!

What to bring

CAMPING EQUIPMENT

  1. Sleeping bag
  2. Sleeping mat
  3. Extra warm clothes for the evening
  4. Head torch
  5. Personal wash kit & small towel
  6. Family first aid kit, including any personal medications
  7. We can supply plates, bowls, cutlery, etc. but you may prefer to bring your own

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT

  1. Waterproof jacket and trousers (avoid bringing your best Goretex for water-based activities)
  2. Clothes to wear under your waterproofs (please avoid jeans and cotton clothes - outdoor or fitness clothing will be an excellent choice)
  3. Extra jumper as it may be cooler on the water

  6. Gloves for the evening
  7. Sunglasses (with retainer cord)
  8. Suncream and midge repellant
  9. Water bottle and snacks

Requirements

The requirements for a canoe experience are minimal. You should:

  1. be at least 10 years old,
  2. have an average level of fitness,
  3. be prepared to have fun exploring on the water and land,
  4. enjoy being outdoors and working, generally, at a leisurely pace.

For all our activities under-18's must be accompanied on the activity by their parent or legal guardian on a maximum ratio of 1 adult to 2 children.

Don't worry if:

  1. your height or weight are above average,
  2. lack experience in canoeing,
  3. or have a specific medical or dietary need.

If any of these do apply, please do contact us before booking and we will do our best to accommodate you on an adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1: 10:00 - Meet at Otter Adventures

Here we will give you a buoyancy aid and paddle in an appropriate size before heading on to the start location for your trip (wind dependent).

You may be travelling in your own vehicle in order to maintain social distancing.

We will canoe to an appropriate wild camp spot with all equipment and food where we will spend the night under the stars and around a camp fire.

Tents as well as cooking and eating equipment will be provided, but you will need to bring sleeping bags, mats and other personal clothing and equipment.

Day 2:

After a hearty breakfast, we will get back in the canoes and paddle to the finish location. We aim to run these as an A-B-C route, but it may be necessary to run a circler route (A-B-A) around an island. Either way, we will aim to finish between 14:00 and 15:00 to allow time to sort equipment, load the canoes on the trailer and get back to your vehicles.

Hopefully you will be on your way home around 16:00 with shared family memories of an amazing weekend away from home, work, technology and with stories to tell in the coming weeks and years.

Cancellations

Reasonable

From the time of booking you have seven full days to change your mind, cancel your entire booking(s) and receive a full refund unless the booking was made 14 days or less prior to the start date of the trip (see below).

After this seven-day cancellation period and up to 8 days (15 for activities involving overnight stays) before the trip takes place, we will seek to reschedule your booking by offering you an alternative date, time or service. If this is not possible, we reserve the right to retain the deposit (25%) if, in refunding it, we would have to cancel a multi-day adventure or run the adventure at a loss.

With 7 days or less notice (14 for trips involving accommodation), we will retain your deposit (25% of the full cost) as we will be very unlikely to fill the place(s) vacated by your cancellation at such short notice.

Any bookings made and paid through the online booking system incur a 5% fee to cover the costs of issuing refunds. Bookings made direct with us and paid via bank transfer, cheque or cash will not incur any charges.

Cancellation of one (or more) place(s) on an adventure (but not the full booking) will be handled in the same way as above.
