  • Description

Head deeper into the hills on a bike and discover views, places and wildlife that take much longer to reach on foot! Hope to see eagles soaring overhead, the highest mountains on the West Highland Peninsulas and get away from cars and people for a while.

The route will be tailored to you but based around Strontian, although other locations may be possible. There are no graded MTB trails here, only tracks and paths (and some of those are faint or even disappear). Hills can be long and shallow or short and steep - let me know what you prefer and I'll work a route out.

If you want to reach a 'summit' then you will need a full day journey - these are available upon request, so please get in touch. It is likely to involve pushing and carrying your bike, and probably getting muddy feet, but it will be worth it.

As part of our belief in creating opportunities and employment for local people, we are currently developing two local high-school students to become qualified and experienced guides using mountain biking as their main activity. Depending upon how quickly they progress, they may be either assisting a more experienced guide on your taster session or the two of them may be guiding your adventure.

    Requirements

A reasonable level of fitness is required as the journey will probably varied terrain and hills (although it is tailored to you).

Minimum age for MTB Tasters is 10 years.

    What to bring
    1. Please feel free to use your own bikes, but do expect us to undertake random checks on their serviceability before commencing the journey. Gravel or touring bikes are ideal, although road bikes and MTB's will be fine
    2. Padded cycling shorts are definitely worth it, but not to everyones taste... So, avoid wearing trousers with big seams between the legs (e.g. jeans) or baggy lower legs (they get caught in the chain). Fitness or outdoor clothing is generally ideal
    3. You may wish to have a velcro strap or bike clip to put around your lower leg (right leg)
    4. Your own full water bottle and snacks for the trip - each bike has a bottle cage on the frame
    5. Cycling helmet with CE mark approved for road/off-road use in the UK. Hire bikes come with a helmet
    6. A lightweight windproof and waterproof outer jacket that is not too flappy
    7. Waterproof trousers are optional but recommended as we will be passing into upland areas during the day
    8. Small personal first aid kit and medication
    9. Personal accident and possessions insurance

    Itinerary

The route will be tailored to you and based around Strontian. No fixed routes, but there are a few options from gentle roads, or long steady climbs, or short steep hills, and adventure biking (with some pushing/carrying). It's up to you!
