Morvern Sea Kayak Expedition

A challenging expedition in remote and varied locations with the aim of circumnavigating the wilderness of the Morvern Peninsula.

With over 100km of kayaking and 4 nights of wild camping and no guarantee of completing the full distance, it's exactly what an adventure should be!

The Morvern Peninsula is a remote and wild part of Scotland overlooked in favour of easier places to access. Which makes it a perfect location for a sea kayak expedition. Loch Sunart and Loch Linnhe are both remote, wild and varied. Conditions can change in minutes and tides are never easy to predict. This is why an expedition guided by a local paddler, makes for a more enjoyable, and safer, expedition irrespective of your level of experience. Your guide will be able to tell stories about locations en route both on and off the water and know where the best camp spots are (decent ones are pretty limited despite the distance).

This is not an expedition for a complete beginner as you will need to be reasonably fit and be familiar with wild camping as you will need to be self-sufficient for cooking/eating throughout.

The length of paddling day is unpredictable due to tides and winds, but we expect a typical day to be between about 15 and 35 km per day. If conditions are perfect, it may even be possible to have a 'rest day' and explore some of the lochs or ancient settlements just off the main route. If the winds are too strong, you may spend two nights (or more) in the same location. Flexibility is crucial for this adventurous expedition.

If the advertised dates do not suit you, please get in touch and we will endeavour to arrange a week that does. Similarly, if you would like more included in your adventure, such as food and cooking, please do get in touch and we can almost certainly arrange this for you. We can also offer discounts for bookings from clubs or groups and may extend the maximum number to six adults in some instances (minimum two people to guarantee running).

NB: If you book online you will be asked to pay the full amount upfront. If you call me, I will take a small deposit instead and the balance nearer the time.

What to bring

The following is a non-exhaustive list of what you should bring with you for this expedition unless you have hired equipment from us.

  1. Sea kayak and paddle
  2. Spraydeck
  3. Buoyancy aid (CE marked and less than 5 years old)
  4. Your preferred paddling clothing appropriate to the forecast weather conditions
  5. Appropriate tent
  6. Sleeping bag
  7. Sleeping mat
  8. Your own plate, mug bowl and cutlery
  9. Your own stove and cook set
  10. Food and snacks for five days
  11. Wash bag with biodegradable toilet paper and eco-friendly soap
  12. Small towel
  13. Spare shoes/sandals to wear on shore or waterproof socks to put under your paddling shoes
  14. Waterproof jacket & trousers to wear onshore
  15. If bringing anything electronic (e.g. phone), bring a battery pack or solar charger
  16. Debit card &/or cash

If hiring one of our kayaks, do remember that space is limited so choose small items where possible (especially sleeping bags and food). Packing things in lots of small dry bags does make things much easier than a few larger ones.

As this is a challenging expedition, the requirements are higher than a bespoke expedition. You will need:

  1. an above average level of fitness
  2. to be under 6'3" (190cm) and 16 stone (100 kg) to fit in our kayaks comfortably
  3. some kayaking experience, not necessarily sea kayaking,
  4. familiarity with outdoor living and wild-camping
  5. to be prepare to paddle hard on occasions, possibly for sustained periods
  6. to be 18 years or over

It is not an adventure for beginners. Sorry.

We have run this with kayakers who are not especially fit, and fit adults who are not regular kayakers. All have had a wonderful, but tough and demanding at times, experience.

If you are unsure, please get in touch direct to discuss your suitability. Should this not seem appropriate for you, we can devise something that is and create a bespoke five day sea kayak expedition for you.

We need a minimum of two people in order to run these expeditions. Our maximum is four, so group sizes will always be small.

The route around Morvern is a linear journey with little flexibility other than distance covered each day. This is where a local guide really comes into their own as wild camping spots are very limited along most of the route.

In an ideal scenario, the itinerary would be roughly as follows, but it will almost certainly be necessary to modify this (possibly by reversing the direction) as the weather dictates:

Day 1: Meet & greet, kit out and afternoon paddle to first wild camp

Day 2: Paddle Loch Linnhe and, possibly, into Sound of Mull & wild camp

Day 3: Sound of Mull into Loch Sunart

Day 4: Relaxing exploration of Loch Teacius or rest day. If necessary, this may be an essential 'catch up' day

Day 5: Aim to reach the head of Loch Sunart and finish point

Reasonable and fair

From the time of booking you have seven full days to change your mind, cancel your entire booking(s) and receive a full refund unless the booking was made 14 days or less prior to the start date of the trip (see below).

After this seven-day cancellation period and up to 8 days (15 for activities involving overnight stays) before the trip takes place, we will seek to reschedule your booking by offering you an alternative date, time or service. If this is not possible, we reserve the right to retain the deposit (25%) if, in refunding it, we would have to cancel a multi-day adventure or run the adventure at a loss.

With 7 days or less notice (14 for longer adventures or those involving accommodation), we will retain 50% of the full cost as we will be very unlikely to fill the place(s) vacated by your cancellation at such short notice.

Any bookings made and paid through the online booking system incur a 10% fee to cover the costs of issuing refunds. Bookings made direct with us and paid via bank transfer, cheque or cash will not incur any charges.

Cancellation of one (or more) place(s) on an adventure (but not the full booking) will be handled in the same way as above.
