Morvern Sea Kayak Expedition

A challenging expedition in remote and varied locations with the aim of circumnavigating the wilderness of the Morvern Peninsula. You will need to be self-sufficient for cooking and sleeping until post-Covid.

Over 100km of kayaking and 4 nights wild camping with no guarantee of completing the full distance - exactly what an adventure should be!

To preempt potential coronavirus concerns, I have decided to make this a guided but 'self-sufficient' expedition. This means you will need to supply your own food and cooking equipment for the duration of the expedition. Kayak or tent hire are optional extras.

The Morvern Peninsula is a remote and wild part of Scotland overlooked in favour of easier places to access. Which makes it a perfect location for a sea kayak expedition. Loch Sunart and Loch Linnhe are both remote, wild and very varied. Conditions can change in minutes and tides are never easy to predict. This is why an expedition guided by a local paddler, makes for a more enjoyable, and safer, expedition irrespective of your level of experience.

This is not an expedition for a complete beginner as you will need to reasonably fit and familiar with wild camping as you will need to be self-sufficient throughout.

The length of paddling day is unpredictable due to tides and winds, but expect anything between 15 and 35 km per day. If conditions are perfect, it may even be possible to have a 'rest day' and explore some of the lochs or towns just off the main route. Flexibility is crucial for this expedition.

The available dates are during a time of year when we expect to have decent weather, however, this cannot be guaranteed. If the advertised dates do not suit you, please get in touch and we will endeavour to arrange a week that does.

If you have any questions about this expedition, or wish to book, please do get in touch and I will make arrangements with you.

NB: If you book online you will be asked to pay the full amount upfront. If you call me, I will take a small deposit instead and the balance nearer the time.

What to bring

The following is a non-exhaustive list of what you should bring with you for this expedition unless you have hired equipment from us.

  1. Sea kayak and paddle
  2. Spraydeck
  3. Buoyancy aid (CE marked and less than 5 years old)
  4. Your preferred paddling clothing appropriate to the forecast weather conditions
  5. Appropriate tent
  6. Sleeping bag
  7. Sleeping mat
  8. Your own plate, mug bowl and cutlery
  9. Your own stove and cook set
  10. Food and snacks for five days
  11. Wash bag with biodegradable toilet paper and eco-friendly soap
  12. Small towel
  13. Spare shoes/sandals to wear on shore or waterproof socks to put under your paddling shoes
  14. Waterproof jacket & trousers to wear onshore
  15. If bringing anything electronic (e.g. phone), bring a battery pack or solar charger
  16. Debit card &/or cash

If hiring one of our kayaks, do remember that space is limited so choose small items where possible (especially sleeping bags and food). Packing things in lots of small dry bags does make things much easier than a few larger ones.

As this can be quite a challenging expedition, the requirements are higher than a bespoke expedition. You will need:

  1. an above average level of fitness,
  2. to be under 6'3" (190cm) and 15 stone (95 kg) to fit in our kayaks comfortably,
  3. some kayaking experience, not necessarily sea kayaking,
  4. familiarity with outdoor living,
  5. to be prepare to paddle hard on occasions,
  6. to be 18 years or over.

It is not an adventure for beginners. Sorry.

We have run this with kayakers who are not very fit, and fit adults who are not kayakers and all have had a wonderful, if quite tough and demanding at times, experience.

If you are unsure, please get in touch direct to to discuss your suitability. Should this not seem appropriate for you, we can devise something that is and create a bespoke five day sea kayak expedition for you.

The route around Morvern is a linear journey with little flexibility other than distance covered each day. This is where a local guide really comes into their own and wild camping spots are very limited along certain parts of the route.

In an ideal scenario, the itinerary would be roughly as follows, but I may well be necessary to modify this, possibly by reversing the direction, as the weather dictates:

Day 1: Meet & greet, kit out and afternoon paddle to wild camp

Day 2: Into Sound of Mull & Wild Camp

Day 3: Sound of Mull to Loch Sunart

Day 4: Explore Loch Teacius/Rest day/Catch up day

Day 5: To head of Loch Sunart and finish point

From the time of booking you have seven full days to change your mind, cancel your booking(s) and receive a full refund unless the booking was made 14 days or less prior to the start date of the trip (see below).

After this seven-day cancellation period and up to 8 days (15 for activities involving overnight stays) before the trip takes place, we will seek to reschedule your booking by offering you an alternative date, time or service. If this is not possible, we reserve the right to retain the deposit if refunding it would mean the cancellation of a multi-day trip, the trip running at a loss or Otter Adventures needing to pay for services no longer required as a direct result of you cancelling.

If during this period we are able to fill the place(s) you have cancelled, we will refund all monies paid by yourself.

With 7 days or less (14 for trips involving accommodation) notice, we will retain your deposit as it is unlikely that we will be very unlikely to fill the place(s) vacated by your cancellation at such short notice.

If you paid in full at the time of booking, an amount equal to 50% of the full fee will be retained and the remainder refunded.

If you choose to cancel on the day but the activity could go ahead, we will discuss this with you and agree an amicable resolution. We would prefer to reschedule your adventure (if possible) than cancel it.
