Intermediate SUP skills and safety class

Running a few times a week, this stand-up paddleboarding class is for paddlers looking to improve their skills, technique, safety and confidence on moving water. Perfect for someone looking to step up to self guided trips or adventures, or solo paddling.

We start with a 60 minute shore-based lesson to cover safety, navigation and trip preparation essentials. We then paddle around the High Tide, allowing you to work on your ability to paddle with and against a current, and to experiment with different paddle strokes. You'll also gain further insight into safety on the river.

You need to be a confident paddler and have previously paddled with us on the River Thames before joining this course.

If you haven't paddled with us before, you can join any of our other private or group lessons to get a bit more experience before joining a High Tide session.

You will be paddling on one of the most beautiful stretches of the Thames upstream towards Eel Pie Island and Teddington Lock.

Please note that we don't cancel sessions due to wet weather - in fact it's lovely on the river in the rain! However, very occasionally, due to extreme weather (high winds, nearby thunderstorms or high river flow), we may need to cancel your session. On these occasions we will contact you and attempt to reschedule, and if this is not an option, we will offer you a credit voucher or full refund. If you don't hear from us, the session is going ahead!





What to bring

Please arrive wearing the clothes you intend to paddle in as we have very limited space to get changed.

We have a safe storage space for your bags and valuables. Toilets are only available in local cafes or pubs, so please plan ahead!

No specialist clothing is required, but no jeans or cotton please, as cotton gets very cold when wet. In warm weather, swimwear or ordinary quick drying gym gear will be fine (shorts/leggings/T-shirt/fleece).

We usually paddle barefoot on these sessions, but you could wear water shoes, or old sandals, flip flops or trainers if you'd prefer to wear shoes.

If it’s sunny please bring an old baseball hat and sun cream.

In colder weather (November - March), wearing a wetsuit would be advisable. We have wetsuits available if requested in advance, or bring your own.

Also, please bring extra layers, a towel and a change of clothes just in case you take a little dip during the lesson.

You may also want to bring a small dry bag for spare waterproof/warm clothing, money, any medications you may need and your phone in a waterproof pouch. If you are worried about losing sunglasses please use a sunglasses strap!

You will be using our paddleboard and paddle. Buoyancy aids are provided and are compulsory on all our sessions. Waist leashes are only used by coaches and very experienced paddlers. Ankle and knee leashes are not permitted on any of our sessions.



Requirements

Please do not attend the session if you, or anyone you have been in contact with, are showing any symptoms of Covid-19.

Only for confident paddlers.

You do not need to be a proficient swimmer, but should be comfortable with falling into water while wearing a buoyancy aid.


We will need to know of any recent injuries prior to the session.

You will need to shower / wash thoroughly after the session if you have fallen in or been splashed, and need to ensure that any open cuts are covered. Note that we do not have shower facilities at Richmond.







Itinerary

Your session will start with a safety briefing and some land-based training on the riverbank near Richmond Bridge.

We will then head out onto the river upstream towards Eel Pie Island and Teddington.

Cancellations

Our cancellation, refund and weather policy

England has a warm and wet climate, and it can often rain, even on summer days.  As an outdoor business we operate year round in all weathers, and only cancel a session if we deem conditions to be unsafe due to high winds, high river flow or thunderstorms nearby. 


The following outlines our policy regarding cancellation and rescheduling: 


  1. If your booking is cancelled at least a full 7 days prior to the activity start time you will be entitled to a full refund, less our booking engine / payment provider fees of 7%. You may also reschedule your booking at no cost.
  2. If your booking is cancelled between 7 days and 24 hours prior to the activity start time we will issue you with a voucher, valid for 12 months, to allow you to reschedule your booking to another time.
  3. If you cancel your booking less than 24 hours prior to the activity start time you will not be entitled to a refund, and you will not be able to reschedule your booking. However if you know someone who could fill your slot, please contact us by email and we’ll try to accommodate them. 
  4. If we cancel your booking at any time, you will be entitled to either reschedule your booking to another time, or to a full refund.


Just to be clear, if the conditions on the day aren’t ideal, but the activity still takes place, you will not be eligible for a refund. We never cancel for rain, so if wet weather is likely please bring a waterproof jacket. If really extreme weather is forecast we will contact you regarding your session. If you don't hear from us, your session is going ahead!


If you are diagnosed with Covid-19, please advise us as soon as possible. Our normal cancellation terms and timings will still apply. If you only advise us within 24 hours of your booking we will only consider rescheduling your session if you can provide adequate proof that you have been asked to isolate or have had a positive Covid test. Apologies if this sounds harsh, but we are a small business and still have to pay our staff and booking engine fees if you cancel at the last moment.
