Rough SUP confidence building workshop

Greater London

In this 2 hr long session with an experienced whitewater SUP coach Alex Tonge, using specialist whitewater boards you will get a chance to take your paddleboarding to another level!

Building on your previous experience, you will be introduced to Rough Water SUP fundamentals enabling you to stay safe in challenging waters and have fun while playing on moving water.

You can expect to learn the basics required for paddling on dynamic water, incl. stance, posture and rough water SUP specific skills.

By the end of the session you will understand how footwork offers stability and control. You will experience the effect your posture has on board control. As a group you will also get a chance to discussed merits and safety of rough and whitewater specific equipment.

This workshop is not aimed at SUP paddlers wishing to progress onto whitewater SUP only - it will be beneficial for any flat water and moving water paddler e.g. river paddler who is wishing to build their confidence and progress in skills. This workshop will definitely improve your confidence, speed and ability to carry out an effective self rescue as well as understand how to help others.

It may appear scary at first but stay assured that you will be learning in a safe environment.

Yes, you will get wet and you will get a bit cold - it's part of the challenge. But we can guarantee that the sense of achievement at the end will be quite something.

Everything after Rough Water SUP will be easy!

*Please note we need a minimum of 4 participants for this workshop to run and we reserve the right to cancel/postpone if there is not enough interest.

What to bring

Winter paddling gear is essential:

  1. drysuit if you have one (although we understand this is not something many will have and we don't rent those as they are made to measure)
  2. wetsuit (one piece or long john with a neoprene top)
  3. layers of merino wool leggings and merino top (this is not compulsory but if you think your wetsuit is too thin and/or a bit loose you can layer it up; we recommend merino as it's been tested but any layers that are designed to keep you warm when wet should work)
  4. neoprene boots - this is a MUST! your feet will get cold so good neoprene footwear is essential; you can layer it with neoprene socks that work wonders!
  5. big beach towel to dry and use as a changing robe - please note there are NO CHANGING ROOMS and NO SHOWERS - we will bring a pop up tent but it's best to arrive in your under layers ready to put your wetsuit on

Extras:

  1. neoprene scull cap
  2. or merino wool hat
  3. neoprene gloves
  4. dry robe to wrap up to warm up on the side

Helmets will be provided

Wetsuits and neoprene gloves/mittens can be hired.

We expect everyone to have their neoprene shoes/boots; NRS neoprene socks can be purchased at £15 (we will bring some on the day).

Essentials to keep you warm from the inside:

  1. high energy bars/snacks
  2. flask with hot chocolate or tea

Decathlon is a good place to stock up with inexpensive neoprene gear that will last you a while. If you want something a bit more technical, the NRS socks are very good and we have been using them for years.

Requirements

SUP experience incl. ability to paddle standing and turning the board. You don't have to be proficient - this is a skill building workshop and you can stay on your knees for most of the time if you are unsure.

Confidence in water while wearing a buoyancy aid is essential.

Ability to self rescue i.e. swim a few metres in full gear and climb back on the board.

Itinerary

This workshop will take place at a chosen Upper Thames weir depending on water levels either Hurley or Boulters. Details will be passed on to the participants well in advance.

You will need to make your way there - driving is best; previously participants paired up and offered each other lifts (we can help to coordinate - Covid restrictions permitting).

Hire car i.e. Zip car (reportedly the cheapest) is also an option.
