Via Ferrata translate from Italian into English as 'The Iron Route'.
This activity is adopted from WW1 - when troops and munitions were moved around the mountainside using ladders and cables.
Today, Via Ferrata is a recreation and allows climbers and non climbers alike to explore these high mountain cliffs, whilst always being attached to a safety cable.
At Honister the idea is adapted to create a journey up Honister Crag, through the old slate mine, past the old workings and onto the summit.
The Via Ferrata Extreme scales Honister Crag via a series of steep ladders, wire bridges and cargo nets, so expect some walking, lots of climbing and a big challenge.
The main event is the Burma Bridge, crossing high above the valley floor on a wire bridge - a test of balance as you head to the other side.
This is a thoroughly rewarding session, high in the mountains and accompanied by dramatic scenery.
We will meet you at Honister Slate Mine, provide your kit for the course and head off to the start.
Here we will offer a full safety brief and demonstration.
The climbing is fun and the session tops out on the summit of Black Star to fantastic views down the Buttermere valley.
This is one of the best view points in the Lake District and a great way to round off the trip!
