Stoneycroft Canyoning

This is a beginner canyoning experience.

Stoneycroft Ghyll is based in the North Lake District, close to Keswick.

This session is up to 3 hours long.

We will meet you on location and provide you with all the kit needed for jumping, sliding, abseiling and scrambling in the gorge. After a 15 minute walk we will enter the canyon.

This is a descent of the Stoneycroft Ghyll, lower section.

There will be full demonstrations and safety briefs of how to slide, jump and descend appropriately to move safely through the environment.

We will descend using natural rock slides and toboggan runs, jump into the corkscrew and splash around in some of the clearest water in the Lake District.

From here, we will enter the lower section. At this point there will be a series of lowers and abseils over waterfalls and cascades in order to progress down. The instructor will rig the abseils on site, and you will be shown where to clip on and a full demonstration of how to abseil/be lowered down the waterfalls will be given by the instructor.

We will be taking you through the gorge using canyoning techniques adapted by the ICOPro canyoning organisation. These techniques are different and therefore safer than general mountaineering techniques used by others.

There is one small zip line to undertake and then we enter the narrow section of the gorge, where it has been mined in the past.

This create a narrow walkway through the rock and we use this slot to exit the canyon safely.

For the trip we will provide you with the following for a comfortable and enjoyable day:

  1. High quality full length 3mm wetsuit
