Our Skills for the Hills course is a great way to gain experience and knowledge towards enjoying the UK mountains safely.
It is a good first step for those looking to build confidence to head out independently, allowing you to gain the understanding towards managing the risks that are associated with mountain walking.
The course runs over 2 days, here is what is covered over both days:
Plan appropriate walks in the mountains
What to wear & why and what extra equipment to carry. We will discuss how to efficiently carry everything and how to effectively pack a rucksack.
Reading weather forecasts for the mountains and understanding how weather effects us on the mountain
Discussions around pace, movement skills & effective walking techniques
Understanding and reading the map, such as the scales, symbols and contours. Looking at the 4D's of navigation and how relay the map to the ground and accurately pace and time your legs and keep track of your journey.
How to move on steep ground and unroped scrambles. There will be the opportunity to look at using a rope for an emergency.
A look at and discussion around mountain flora and fauna. Understanding the geology of the Uk uplands.
How to respond to and deal with emergencies and hazards in the mountains and what to do if something goes
Both days will run the mountain environment.
