Indoor to Outdoor Climber Course

Indoor to outdoor transition course - for those looking to progress into outdoor rock climbing and trad climbing. We will use a mixture of sport climbing venues and trad climbing areas to develop your knowledge and understanding of outdoor climbing. 

This is a 3 day course.

A general itinerary and course outline:

Day 1:

We will visit a sport climbing venue - the aim will be to either get you moving on the rock outdoors, or to lead a sport climb

On the day we will:

  1. Recap tying in
  2. Belaying & lowering a climber
  3. Look at bolts and lower offs and how to safely thread the ropes
  4. How to clip the rope and avoid back clipping or z clipping
  5. Comfortable and safe clipping positions 
  6. Different belay devices and their uses 
  7. Movement skills/coaching

Day 2:

We will go to trad climbing venue and here you will:

  1. Be guided on a rock climb
  2. Trad climbing equipment - nuts, cams and hexes
  3. Looking at placing climbing gear
  4. Removing gear whilst climbing
  5. Seconding climbs and learning the systems
  6. Learning climbing calls 
  7. Tying clove hitches
  8. Further movement coaching
  9. Safe descent

Day 3:

  1. 'In series' climbing to practice gear placement and runner management
  2. Tying into the belay safely 
  3. Stance organisation and belay changeovers
  4. Ghost roping (placing gear on lead, with a top rope)
  5. Building belays (ABC, IDEAS principles) 
  6. Learn to belay a second
  7. Safe abseiling and descent from the crag


This course is non-residential

Cancellations

Cancellation Policy

CANCELLATION

In the unlikely event we have to cancel, we will offer a full refund if an alternate date can't be offered.

We can also issue vouchers to be used on other events or sessions with us. 

If cancellation occurs within 30 days of the course or activity, we will retain 50% of the full price (your deposit).

If cancellation is within 14 days of the activity we will retain the full amount.

Winter course conditions: It may be necessary to change the outline of the courses to offer general mountaineering/mountain skills programmes with part refunds.


COVID-19

In the current COVID climate, here is our COVID stance and policy. 

Any booking that cannot go ahead due to Covid restrictions or national lockdowns will be given a full refund. 

In light of the successful vaccine roll out and easing of restrictions in England, we are not offering COVID refunds at this time. 

We take our health very seriously here at LDM, our instructors will wear face masks in close contact scenarios and we will regularly use hand sanitiser. Our instructors are double vaccinated and COVID aware, following all up to date information.

Where we'll meet

The meeting location is decided on the day.

Day 1 meeting location will be in Tilberthwaite Quarry car park, so we can use the Sport Climbing venues in the area. All meeting locations will be fully outlined the itinerary forms we send out.
