Foundation Safety & Rescue Training


This course is designed for all paddlers wishing to develop their safety and rescue skills and is also a pre-requisite for coaching courses. You can find more information about this course on British Canoeing’s website here.

We are now able to take bookings for FSRT courses, current available dates are bookable, if these do not work for you please contact us, we may be able to add some further dates to suit you. This course is being run with social distancing measures in place therefore you will need to practice these skills ahead of any future skill assessment.

What to bring

  1. Your full paddling kit, plus as many of the recommended items from the syllabus as you can.
  2. We will have additional throw lines available if you don't yet have one.
  3. Your own kayak and paddles, we will have access to boats available if needed.
  4. Footwear that you can wear in your boat and in the water!
  5. More warm clothes than you would usually take paddling and changes of clothes.
  6. Your British Canoeing number if you are a member.


Candidates wishing to attend Foundation Safety and Rescue Training must meet the following requirements:

Able to swim in normal paddling clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions

Boat-based candidates must also hold the Paddle Explore Award, 2 Star Award or be of equivalent ability due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to complete the course.

Bank-based participants accessing the course are not required to hold a Personal Performance Award. However, they should be prepared to fully participate in all relevant aspects of the course

A first aid certificate is not a pre-requisite, however holding a first aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers.


Foundation Safety and Rescue Training courses are typically delivered over one day and will involve at least eight hours teaching time.

These practical courses take place in calm, sheltered waters either as bank-based or boat-based courses.

You will cover:

  1. General theory and planning
  2. Bank-based rescues
  3. Boat-based rescues
  4. Scenarios

Cancellation Policy

  1. Full refund if the booking is under or equal to £200 and cancelled at least a full 72h prior to the activity start time.
  2. Full refund if the booking is over £200 and cancelled at least a full 5 days prior to the activity start time.
  3. If the conditions on the day aren’t ideal but the activity still takes place, the customer will not be eligible for a refund.
