Anglesey provides the ideal classroom, offering an incredible range of tidal races, headlands, sheltered bays and committing coastal journeys. Throughout the course you'll explore how to make sound decisions, manage groups, and adapt your leadership style to changing environmental conditions while maintaining an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone.


Working in small groups, you'll receive personalised coaching and constructive feedback as you develop the confidence to lead journeys in moderate conditions. The emphasis is on practical, real-world leadership, with plenty of opportunities to take responsibility for planning and leading sections of each day.

This course is designed for experienced sea kayakers who are confident paddling in moderate sea conditions and are looking to develop the leadership skills required to safely lead others on coastal journeys.

It is ideal for paddlers who:

  1. Have well-developed personal sea kayaking skills and are comfortable in wind, waves and tidal waters.
  2. Want to build confidence in planning and leading journeys in moderate conditions.
  3. Are preparing for a sea kayak leadership assessment or working towards a leadership qualification.
  4. Already lead informally within a club or group and want to improve their judgement, decision making and group management.
  5. Wish to develop practical leadership skills through coaching, feedback and real-world scenarios in a supportive learning environment.

Participants should have experience of journeying in moderate sea conditions, be comfortable performing assisted and self-rescues, and have a good understanding of navigation, weather and tidal planning. This course focuses on developing leadership rather than personal paddling skills, although individual coaching will be provided where appropriate to support your progression.
