Join us and become a vital part of monitoring Cornwall’s coastal wildlife

Description

Combining kayaking, water eDNA data collection and collecting marine litter Koru is offering exclusive trips ona first come basis. Launching from the exclusive Budock Vean Hotel private foreshore, our adventure takes you deep into the heart of the Helford River’s tidal landscapes. Glide across tranquil waters framed by ancient oak woodlands and mesmerizing geological formations. As you navigate the river's serene corridors, our friendly and experienced guides will be your companions, providing expert kayaking instruction.

While paddling along the routes, the team collects water using a large syringe and pushes it through an extremely fine filter, gathering tiny fragments containing DNA from organisms that inhabit or have recently passed through the area. Back in the laboratory, scientists extract the DNA and compare it against global genetic databases. Because every species has a unique genetic “signature,” it’s possible to identify who left their trace in the water—uncovering the hidden biodiversity beneath the surface. Our findings so far:
