Description
This one-day course is for anyone starting out in paddlesport who wishes to learn the basics of staying safe, as well as being a pre-requisite for the British Canoeing paddlesport instructor award.
Training will take place on the Woodmill lake and you’ll use a wide variety of paddle sport craft and equipment as you work through a range of scenarios. You’ll cover a broad foundation of issues which may affect your safety and learn rescue techniques including options from the bank and boat.
Requirements
Candidates wishing to attend paddlesport safety and rescue course must meet the following requirements:
- Able to swim in normal paddling clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions
- Candidates must also hold the Paddle Explore Award, 2 Star Award or be of equivalent ability due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to complete the course
A first aid certificate is not a pre-requisite. However holding a first aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers.

The objective of this training course is to introduce simple and safe skills that provide tools to solve simple common paddling scenarios in flat/sheltered water regardless of the craft.
Candidates will learn:
- Skills which will enable them to ensure the safety of themselves and others
- Appropriate rescue skills which can be used to help themselves and/or others in difficulty
