Dinghy Instructor (3 day Single Handed)

sailing - Up to 5 people


During this three day, COVID secure course, candidates are trained to deliver, RYA youth and National Sailing scheme, courses in single handed dinghies.

When social distancing and COVID restrictions allow, there will be a two day 'top-up' course to qualify instructors to teach in double handers.

What to bring


Pen and Paper, G14, Powerboat Level 2 License, Passport Photo, proof of passing the Pre Entry Assessment, First Aid Certificate & safe and fun certificate.


Participants should bring a packed lunch, you are welcome to use the fridge and microwave at the centre. Alternatively, lunch can be purchased from nearby shops and restaurants.


Hot drinks and water are available from the Centre.


We do have a small safe onsite that can hold phones and car keys, however we suggest leaving expensive valuables at home.

Clothing List

Please bring normal sailing kit for the forecast conditions. the centres can provide all specialist equipment such as buoyancy aids, wetsuits and waterproofs as required.

We advise you bring:

  1. Closed toe footwear
  2. Warm layers would be useful such as a fleece or jumper. It can be much cooler on the water.
  3. Woolly hat / Sun hat
  4. Change of clothes - other than the ones you will wear afloat
  5. Towel, Sun Glasses & security strap, sun screen.


Candidates must be at Seamanship Sailing Level and:

  1. Passed a Dinghy Instructor Pre Entry Assessment
  2. Be 16 years old or over
  3. Valid First Aid Certificate
  4. Powerboat Level 2 License
  5. RYA Safe and Fun Certificate.


The first two days of the course will give candidates an introduction to teaching sailing and gave them opportunity to run at least two beginner sessions as well as further development sessions.

The third day allows candidates to revisit the session from the previous two days and is moderated by a second coach assessor.

Throughout the course candidates will also have opportunity to lead shore based sessions covering sailing theory from the National Sailing Scheme


Full refund if cancelled 21 days prior to the commencement date

If cancelling a booking more than 21 days prior to the activity commencement date, alternative dates, course credit or a refund can be offered. For some cancellations an administration fee may be charged. Cancellations within 21 days are charged at the full rate and non-refundable.
