Description

The SLSGB Surf Coach Safety and Rescue Award is specifically designed for outdoor water-sport instructors looking to gain the required level of lifesaving expertise.


Delivered by experienced RNLI beach lifeguards, this course is the minimum lifesaving prerequisite for SUP and outdoor activity instructors who will be responsible for taking groups into the sea.


Delivered from our Royal William Yard location, you will receive comprehensive instruction on core beach and sea safety techniques, first aid, surf rescues and life support. After the series of theory and practical sessions, you will have a thorough knowledge of surf coach safety, rescue scenarios, how to effectively assess physical condition and carry out the practical aspects of surf lifesaving.


Course Pre-requisites

  1. 16+
  2. Member of Surf Lifesaving GB (SLSGB)
  3. Competent fitness levels including 200m timed Pool swim in under 5 minutes
  4. Completion of pre course online learning content (est 8 hrs)


What to bring

Wetsuit, suitable footwear for rocky beach, towel.


Physical requirements

  1. A signed declaration of 200m timed Pool swim in under 5 minutes witnessed by lifeguard/swim teacher /coach in a pool of not less than 25m (pre-course)
  2. Open water swim competency. The candidate will complete to the satisfaction of the Trainer Assessor a demonstration of open water swimming competency, confidence and fitness that is sufficient to be able to support basic lifesaving activity. (on course)


Itinerary

1. First Aid

 Identification and management of the following conditions: Head injuries, spinal injuries, choking, bleeding, sunburn, fractures and dislocations, heat stroke, cramp, exhaustion, shock, hypothermia, fainting, strain/sprain, insect bites, eye injuries

2. Life support

 CPR on all ages

 Primary, secondary survey on casualties with recovery position

 Recovery position, stabilisation and after care

 Choking incidents on all ages

 Airway assistance, choking and vomiting

2. Lifesaving skills, rescue and knowledge

 Board rescues of conscious and unconscious casualties

 Management and rescues of suspected spinal injuries and movement of the casualties

Open water rescue up to 50 metres from shore

 Lifeguard signals and flags

4. Fitness test and releases

200m swim non-stop in open water

 200m run in under one minute

 400m-rescue board paddle


Cancellations

Standard: Guaranteed full refund if cancelling 72h prior.

You will be entitled to a full refund under the following circumstances:

  • If your booking is under £200 and you cancelled at least a full 24h prior to the activity start time.
  • If your booking is over £200 and you cancelled at least a full 72h prior to the activity start time.
  • If the centre cancels the activity at any time.

If the conditions on the day aren’t ideal but the activity is still taking place, refunds & rescheduling will only be provided under special circumstance
