  • Description

This is a mountain navigation course with 6 spaces, open to the public.

This course is designed to help develop understanding of mountain navigation, looking at the features of the map, contours and using compasses.

This course is designed for walkers with navigation experience, looking to hone their skills and improve their understanding.

We start with some theory (1 hour max)

Here we will have a discussion and refresher, looking at:

    1. Choosing an appropriate map
    2. Understanding scales and symbols
    3. Gridlines & measurements
    4. Grid References (refresher)

On the hill we will be getting you to work independently and navigate using the following techniques:

    1. Orientate the map
    2. 4 D's of navigation
    3. Measure distances
    4. Timing

On this course there will be much more focus on:

    1. Intricate contours & ground interpretation
    2. The compass and its features
    3. Compass bearings & accurately following bearings across open ground

The day will run in pathless and often boggy terrain, which is often featureless and requires good contour interpretation and solid skills with pacing and timing on each leg.

The price of this day is inclusive of:

    1. A qualified Mountain Leader (or higher award) affiliated with Mountain Training Association
    2. Local & intimate knowledge of the venues
    3. Technical equipment
    4. Professional coaching & instruction
