We are delighted to be working with Essex Waterways Limited to bring you our beloved annual 'City to the Sea' paddle from Chelmsford to Heybridge Basin, along the length of the glorious Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, approximately 14 miles/22km.
This is a RED tour. Red tours are longer and faster than green or blue tours. These are suitable for experienced paddlers as they are normally tidal and will have more challenging aspects, such as choppy water. This category also includes longer distances on non-tidal and sheltered water e.g. our ‘City to the Sea’ event (approximately 22km.) You must have completed at least one green and one blue tour with us prior to joining a red tour.
We meet at Springfield Basin at 7am with a briefing at 7:30am and plan to all be launched by 8am. Will stop for early brunch half way at the Old Stables Tea Rooms at Paper Mill Lock and then paddle to Heybridge Basin, for a well deserved pint in the pub! You can expect to arrive at Heybridge from 2:30pm-4pm depending on your speed. You are responsible for arranging transport of yourself and your board/kit (unless you are using a Frangipani SUP board, which you can book here through optional extras) to the start point and from the finish point. You will be expected to portage your own board at all of the locks, bring and carry: a dry-bag with all your own stuff, your own phone in a water-proof pouch, a water bottle, any medications, money for lunch/pub etc. and wear/bring suitable clothing and spares. We usually have a support vehicle on route to carry extra or heavier items for us. Once you have booked your place you will be sent all of the finer planning details via email. Please note that £5 of your fee will be donated to Essex Waterways Limited, who are supporting us on the event, to contribute to the continued running of this beautiful navigation. Mahalo!
Please bring with you a small dry bag. You will need to carry a bottle of water, spare waterproof clothing, a snack bar, money for the café, any medications you may need and your phone in a waterproof pouch. If it’s sunny please bring an old baseball hat and sun cream. Paddling footwear must be worn.
You must be able to swim 25m clothed. You must be able to portage (lift & carry) your board, paddle and dry bag in and out at the start point & end point and at each of the 11 locks en route. This paddle is approximately 14 miles/22km long and will take several hours. You must have a reasonable level of fitness and stamina to complete it.
If you need to cancel and want a refund, please do so within 48 hours of the start time of your booking.
Although we hope you don't need to cancel your booking, you can do so at any time up to 48 hours prior the start time of the booked SUP activity and receive a full refund. If you cancel within 48 hours of the start time of the booked SUP activity, or you are very late for or do not attend the booked SUP activity (i.e. a ‘no-show’) you will not receive a refund. Thanks for your understanding.
We will provide further information about parking closer to the event date.
