Paddleboard Taster - one hour

Richmond-upon-Thames
sup - Up to 6 people

Description

Active360 Richmond are offering taster paddleboard sessions on the Thames over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The one-hour sessions will be running every hour from 11.30 on Saturday, from 12.30 on Sunday and 13.00 on Bank Holiday Monday, 26th August. You will receive a short safety briefing and then be taught how to launch your board and some basic paddle strokes before setting out on the river.

You will be paddling on a beautiful stretch of the Thames from Richmond riverside, and will paddle towards Richmond Lock and then, time permitting, through the arches of Richmond Bridge and upstream towards Ham.

You will need to be able to swim and be confident in the water. A certain level of flexibility and ability to get up to standing from kneeling is required for learning to paddleboard.

You'll be sharing your instructor/s, but you'll be sure to meet some interesting people to add to the experience. The session will start with a safety briefing and some land-based training before heading out on the water for a guided tour. You'll be able to ask for technique advice and tips along the way. Don't be shy!

Cancellation and Bad Weather

Occasionally, due to bad weather (high winds or poor visibility), instructor availability or low booking numbers, we may need to cancel your paddleboard session. On these occasions we will attempt to reschedule your lesson, and if this is not an option, we will offer you a credit voucher or full refund. We will always endeavour to contact you as soon as we are able to discuss the options with you.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your session, you will need to give us a minimum of 48 hours notice. Please email us on [email protected] or call us on 0203 488 1785

What to bring

No specialist clothing is required, but no jeans please, as cotton gets very cold when wet. In warm weather, ordinary quick drying gym gear will be fine (shorts/leggings/T-shirt/fleece).

We usually paddle barefoot on these sessions, but please bring some water shoes, or old sandals, flip flops or trainers that you don't mind getting wet to take with you in case we need to stop during the session.

Buoyancy aids are provided and are compulsory on all Active360 sessions. Waist leashes are only used by coaches and very experienced paddlers. Ankle and knee leashes are not permitted on any of our sessions.

Physical requirements

You do not need to be a proficient swimmer, but should be comfortable with falling into water while wearing a buoyancy aid.

A certain level of flexibility and ability to get up to standing from kneeling is required for learning to paddleboard.

We will also need to know of any recent injuries prior to the session.

You will need to shower / wash thoroughly after the session if you have fallen in or been splashed, and need to ensure that any open cuts are covered.

Itinerary

Your one-hour session will start with a safety briefing and some land-based training on the riverbank or our pontoon near Richmond Bridge. This typically takes 15-20 minutes depending on group size.

We will then head out onto the river, either upstream towards Eel Pie Island and Teddington or downstream towards Isleworth, Kew Gardens and Chiswick, depending on the tide.

*How far we go will depend on conditions on the day.
