The BSUPA Level 1 “Ready to Ride” course is aimed at adults or children aged 13 and over who are looking to gain their first ever Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) qualification. Ideally you will have paddleboarded before, but beginners are welcome if they can swim and/or have other water sports experience.

The Ready to Ride certificate is your gateway to further SUP qualifications and is ideal if you are looking to hire boards at home or abroad.


Your qualified BSUPA instructor will take you through this nationally recognised course. Areas covered will include...

  1. How to choose your board/kit
  2. How to adjust your paddle and prepare for the water
  3. Assessing the environment around you and how it will affect your trip
  4. How to get on the water
  5. Basic paddle techniques
  6. Standing, stopping and turning
  7. Self-rescue
  8. Skills assessment and action plan
  9. Safe exit from the water

The course lasts around two-hours from start to finish, and we will ensure you have all of the kit necessary for a safe and enjoyable time on the water. The session runs on flat-water with very little flow. Ideal conditions for learning!

At the end of the course you will be given your BSUPA Level 1 Ready to Ride certificate, or be given the tips and pointers you need to hit your target.

These sessions run on weeknight evenings and a minimum of two people are required for the group session to run. If there are fewer than 2 people booked we may call you and ask you to move your session. Alternatively you can book the private 1:1 BSUPA Ready to Ride Course if you wish to learn as a solo paddler.


What to bring

No specialist clothing is required, but no jeans or cotton please, as cotton gets very cold when wet. In colder weather (November - March), wearing a wetsuit would be advisable. We have wetsuits available if requested in advance, or bring your own. Also, please bring extra layers, a towel and a change of clothes just in case you take a little dip during the lesson.

In warm weather, swimwear or ordinary quick drying gym gear will be fine (shorts/leggings/T-shirt/fleece).

If possible please arrive wearing the clothes you intend to paddle in.

We usually paddle barefoot on these sessions, but in winter you could wear water shoes, or old sandals, flip flops or trainers.

If it’s sunny please bring an old baseball hat and sun cream.


You may also want to bring a small dry bag for spare waterproof/warm clothing, money, any medications you may need and your phone in a waterproof pouch. If you are worried about losing sunglasses please use a sunglasses strap!

Buoyancy aids are provided and are compulsory on all Active360 sessions. Waist leashes are only used by coaches and very experienced paddlers. Ankle and knee leashes are not permitted on any of our sessions.

Requirements

In light of the the current Covid-19 restrictions, we will require you to keep a safe distance from each other and from your coach during both the safety briefing and the on-water session. Please do not attend the session if you, or anyone you have been in contact with, are showing any symptoms of Covid-19.

You do not need to be a proficient swimmer, but should be comfortable with falling into water while wearing a buoyancy aid.

A certain level of flexibility and ability to get up to standing from kneeling is required for learning to paddleboard.

We will also need to know of any recent injuries prior to the session.

You will need to shower / wash thoroughly after the session if you have fallen in or been splashed, and need to ensure that any open cuts are covered. Note that we do not have shower facilities at Richmond.

Itinerary

Your session will start with a socially-distanced safety briefing and an introduction to paddleboarding on our pontoon. We will cover kit, safety requirements and the session plan. This typically takes 30-35 minutes on a Ready-to-Ride course.

We will then head out onto the river, either upstream towards Eel Pie Island and Teddington or downstream towards Richmond Lock, Isleworth, Kew Gardens and Chiswick, depending on the tide. On the water we will work on the techniques we discussed on the pontoon.


*The distance actually covered will depend on conditions on the day.


Cancellations

Our refund / cancellation policy

You will be entitled to a refund under the following circumstances:

  1. If your booking is cancelled at least a full 5 days prior to the activity start time you will be entitled to a full refund. You may reschedule your booking at no cost.
  2. If your booking is cancelled between 5 days and 48 hours prior to the activity start time you will be entitled to a refund less a 25% admin fee, or you may reschedule your booking at no cost.
  3. If you cancel your booking between 24 hours a 48 hours prior to the activity start time you will not be entitled to a refund, and we charge a 25% admin fee for rescheduling your booking.
  4. If you cancel your booking less than 24 hours prior to the activity start time you will not be entitled to a refund, and you will not be able to reschedule your booking.
  5. If we cancel your booking at any time, you will be entitled to a full refund.


Note that if the conditions on the day aren’t ideal, but the activity still takes place, you will not be eligible for a refund.


If you are diagnosed with Covid-19, or advised by NHS Test and Trace to self-isolate, please advise us as soon as possible.
