  • Description

Let us take you on a guided hike through some the UK's oldest landscapes, carved out by ice age glaciers and meltwater, explore the impressive valleys and ancient waterfalls, right in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, with prices from £40 per person. .

Take in the sights and scenery of the majestic Malham Cove, scramble up the intimidating Gordale Scar and why not take a dip in the pool below the really rather pleasant Janet’s Foss.

Perfect as a family day out, a pleasant walk with friends or a chance to see and do something different to the usual weekend walk.

All our guided hikes are bespoke and subject to staff availability. Please select the exact number of participants at the checkout and your preferred date and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Price is £240 for the first 6 participants then £40 per person thereafter.

    Requirements

This guided hike is mostly well trodden paths, gravel tracks and stone paved stairways, suitable for ages 10* and up, however a basic level of walking fitness will be required due to the mixed terrain and gradients throughout the day.

We try to be as accessible as possible, however, if you have any mobility issues or otherwise it is best to share this with us as soon as possible so we can try to make any reasonable adjustments necessary.

*Under 18's must be accompanied by a participating responsible adult.

    What to bring

Your Mountain Leader will be prepared with all the necessary navigation and safety equipment required for the day; however, participants are expected to come suitably prepared for the weather conditions on the day.

    Personal equipment required includes:

    1. Comfortable, quick drying walking clothing, (NO cotton).
    2. Waterproof jacket AND trousers.
    3. Warm Insulating layers and spare layers in rucksack.
    4. Walking boots or sturdy walking shoes. No wellies, crocs or trainers please as we will be walking on mixed terrain and gradients.
    5. Packed lunch and snacks.
    6. Personal water bottle, 2 litres recommended as a minimum.
    7. Personal rucksack.
    8. Personal Blister Plasters (optional but strongly recommended).
    9. Small personal first aid kit (optional but strongly recommended).
    10. Head torch and spare batteries (optional but highly recommended).

Our Mountain Leaders reserve the right to restrict participation if you arrive ill-prepared for the conditions on the day. No refunds can or will be offered in these circumstances.

    Itinerary

The day will be flexible in its structure, with routes suitable for the group's current abilities plus the weather and conditions underfoot, allowing plenty of opportunities to explore the local surroundings, enjoying the day out in the dales and taking lots of photos.

Our experienced Mountain Leaders will always choose the best route on the day to provide you with a great adventure and memories that will last a lifetime.

Below is an example route description:

    1. Starting from the National Park visitor centre we will head out towards the serene Janet's Foss, a popular wild swimming and dog walking spot.
    2. From there we continue on to the imposing Gordale Scar, an impressive overhanging limestone cliff and waterfall. Rock climbers are often found here hanging from their fingertips from seemingly invisible holds on the wall. Depending on the group ability we may scramble up the small waterfall and steep valley behind to the top of the moors and on to Malham Tarn.
    3. After enjoying a spot of lunch by the waterside and a potential visit from the wild ponies and cattle we will head south, through an increasingly steeper and narrow valley before coming out onto the open tops of Malham Cove.
    4. Watching our step, trying not fall down any of the Grykes between the paving slab like Clints, we will eventually come across the stone staircase that will take us down to the bottom of the Cove. On our way we may see some more climbers performing near impossible feats of strength and athleticism.
    5. Finally, we will follow the source water of the river Aire until we find ourselves back in the village and end our day outside the National Park Visitor Centre.
