Dive into the wild and beautiful waters of Torbay with Devon Sea Swim Ltd! Our introduction to safe sea swimming group is perfect for everyone who wants to explore the swimming in the ocean in safety. Led by experienced sea swim coach, Rhian, this one and a half hour session will introduce you to all the basics you need to consider before entering the ocean. You’ll learn how to consider weather, tides, water quality, and risks so that you can swim safely and confidently. We’ll also cover topics such as cold water shock prevention, hypothermia awareness, what equipment is essential for safe sea swimming - plus much more! The time spent in the water will depend on weather conditions but whatever they are we guarantee an experience that will make you feel more confident about starting your safe sea swim journey.


We take safety seriously at Devon Sea Swim Ltd. Even if you have some experience of sea swimming, we ask that you attend this session before joining a Devon Sea Swim training group so that we can be sure you have a basic safety awareness for safe sea swimming and 5he appropriate sea swimming ability for your chosen swim group/ training session.



Requirements

  1. Swimmers must be able to swim 200 meters (8 lengths of a 25meter swimming pool) continuously and comfortably. Your swim ability will be tested informally during this session.

What to bring

  1. Wetsuits, googles, bright coloured swim hat and tow floats are essential. Non wetsuits swimmers must be confirmed before booking.
  2. Booties/wetsuit socks are not essential but advisable to protect feel from rocks, shells, weaver fish etc.
  3. Towel and / or changing robe
  4. Warm loose layered clothing including warm hat and socks for post swim warming up.
  5. Post swim snack and warm drink.
  6. Waterproof pouch for car keys/electronics
  7. Any medications that may be required pre/during/after swimming
  8. Consider carrying personal safety equipment such as a whistle (to attract attention) and a mobile phone (to call for assistance).


Itinerary

  1. The session will begin with discussions about current swim experience and knowledge, followed by an introduction to tides, weather, safety and equipment.
  2. swimmers will then get ready to enter the water where you will have chance to practice safe entry into the water, how to call for help and float to live, undertake a short relaxed swim in shallow water, followed by safe exits and how to prevent after drop.
  3. the session will finish up with discussion about driving safely after cold water swimming and any further questions you may have to help you start or continue your safe Sara swim journey.
