    Description

    This workshop looks at the skills need to guide/ leaded a group in a white water environment. 

    The following topics will be covered

    Physical Skills:  Personal paddling skills, group management, emergency and rescue techniques.

    Theoretical and Practical Knowledge: Equipment (types and usage), safety and emergency procedures, river hydrology, leadership, signals, individual and group coaching.

    Whitewater Craft 

    The IRF defines self-steered whitewater craft in two categories. Crafts within each category have similarities and guiding styles. The key difference between each category is where an individual is in relation to the craft and the propulsion method. 

    Category A: includes all craft that can carry up to three people in a seated or kneeling position on the craft. These craft are typically propelled using paddles or hands.

    Category B: includes all craft where the person(s) using them are predominantly in the water. These craft are typically propelled using legs, feet, or flippers. 

    Pre Course Requirements

    Training:

    1. Age 16 or over
    2. Be able to swim

    Assessment:

    1. Logbook
    2. Valid 2 day First Aid training
    3. Aged 18 or over

    All IRF awards are valid for 3 years when supported with a valid first aid certificate.

    What to bring
    1. Towel
    2. Swimwear
    3. £1 coin for locker


    CIWW Provides all other specialist equipment required to take part in this activity - e.g wetsuits, wetsuit boots, helmets and buoyancy aids. If you have your own White Water Specification equipment, you are welcome to bring along. If you chose to wear your own wetsuit/drysuit, it must by full length.

    Itinerary

    Please arrange to meet at Cardiff International White Water ready for a 0900 start on day one of the course.
